Its not often as a cake designer that you get to share the cake cutting ceremony. Today I was lucky enough to be there for a friend's 40th and share the Happy Birthday celebration.
And there it was, a job defining moment. The gift of a cake, make personal with the colours of his age old soccer team. A crowd of friends and family gathered around. Everyone singing Happy Birthday, and in that moment, wishing him their love and blessings.
You could see the emotion it evoked. That affirmation that everyone needs, that they are loved and important.
And that is why it was a job defining moment. Because a cake isn't just a scientific result of blending ingredients together and baking. It comes wrapped in love and affection and demands that everyone gather round to focus for just that moment on that person or couple.
And that is why I love what I do. Because I create something special that is part of life's important moments, part of an all important ritual of celebration. And in our fast paced world, stopping for a while to celebrate life's riches is exactly what we need.
So here it is. A big design that says....this moment is special enough to have something really rather grand to mark it with. I hope I hit the mark.
